One June 4th, my family and I decided to go whitewater rafting(急流泛舟) down the Nantahala River in Western North Carolina. It was a perfect day to be out on the water. My father thought that we could all deal with a new situation, so he decided to bring us to go without a guide at this new, hard course. My mom and I were upset by my dad’s decision, but my brother was pleased with it. We got life jackets, our raft and paddles that are used to row it, and then took a bus to the drop point where we carried the raft to the icy cold

3

water. Having finished the training, we were on our own.

Within the first hour, we got stuck on two rocks. Another raft had to hit ours to get us off the rocks. After about two hours, we saw a huge rock on the right side of the river. It was coming out of the water about ten feet high and about fifteen feet wide. Somehow, we ended up on top of this rock. After about a minute, water started rushing in where my brother was sitting. When he started falling into the water, I tried to pull him back. Unfortunately, we fell off together. My mother jumped in after us, but she could only get to my brother because he was closer than I was. My dad jumped out and ran up the bank of the river to get to the road, so he could see where I was. Little to his knowledge, I was picked up after about two minutes by a stranger in another raft and was heading down the river toward a little resting spot. I kept crying because I was so frightened and worried about my family. Thankfully, everyone was fine, just a little shaken up and very cold.

When we got back in our raft, we had only two paddles for four people. We all knew that it was going to take a very long time to get to the end. One of the guides for another raft told us that there was an earlier place we could get out, but we would have to carry our raft about a quarter of a mile. At that point, no one really cared if we had to do anything after we got out of the water. We finally got to the ending point. We got out of the water, wet and cold.

To this day, I have never been so cold in my life. I have not been rafting again because of this terrible experience. All of this happened because my dad did not hire a guide. 16. How did the writer feel about his father’s decision?

A. Worried. B. Excited. C. Surprised. D. Pleased. 17. After falling into the river, the writer was saved by ___________.

A. his father B. his mother C. a stranger D. a guide 18. We can infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 that the writer and his family ___________.

A. felt so tired that they wouldn’t want to carry the raft B. wanted to get out of the water as soon as possible C. were so careless that they noticed nothing D. were too frightened to do anything

4

19. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Difficulties in finding a rafting guide. B. One’s attitudes towards rafting. C. A family’s rafting experience. D. An introduction to rafting.

C

There was a time in the 1960’s and 1970’s when some people believed that coffee would replace tea as Britain’s favourite drink, but that did not happen, and today, tea remains Britain’s favourite drink.

To say that the British are fond of tea is something of an understatement. From the Royal(皇室的) Family down to the homeless and the out-of-work, tea is more than just a pleasure. It is an important part of life!

The popularity of tea in the United Kingdom has a long history. It was in 1657 that Thomas Garway, the owner of a coffee house, sold the first tea in London. The drink soon became popular as another choice besides coffee.

In those days, however, tea was not something for anyone. For a century and a half, it remained an expensive drink. Many bosses served a cup of it to their workers in the middle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British institution, the “tea break”. But as a social drink outside the workplace, tea was served for the nobility(贵族) and for the growing middle classes. Among those who had the money for tea, it became very popular as a drink to be enjoyed in cafés and “tea gardens”.

It was the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, in around 1800, started the popular “afternoon tea”, which took place at about four o’clock. At about the same time, the Earl of Sandwich popularised a new way of eating bread with something (e. g. jam) between them, and before long, a small meal at the end of the afternoon with tea and sandwiches had become part of a way of life.

As tea became much cheaper during the nineteenth century, its popularity spread right through British society. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day’s labour. This meal has become known

5

as “high tea”.

Today, tea can be drunk at any time of day. Most people in Britain drink tea for breakfast. The mid-morning “tea break” is an institution in British offices and factories. Later in the day, “afternoon tea” is still a way of life in the south of England and among the middle classes, while “high tea” has remained a tradition in the north of Britain. 20. Who played an important part in the beginning of tea time in England? A. Thomas Garway. B. The Royal Family.

C. The Earl of Sandwich. D. The Duchess of Bedford. 21. What does the underlined word “institution” mean in Paragraph 4?

A. drink B. workplace C. tradition D. order 22. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The “tea break” kept the workers from being sleepy after lunch. B. Workers could enjoy a cup of tea in “tea gardens” at their workplace. C. “High tea” was usually served with the main meal for the middle classes. D. The “afternoon tea” together with sandwiches became popular in around 1800. 23. What is the best title of the passage?

A. The Popularity of Tea B. Tea and the British C. Tea and the Middle Class D. The History of Tea

A Life in Sport

Li Ning was called the prince(王子) of gymnasts. When he retired (stopped being a gymnast) at the age of 26, he had won 106 gold medals in major competitions across the world. He was the best. But even though he had won everything it was possible to win in his sport, Li Ning retired with the feeling that he had failed. He was disappointed because he had not performed well in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

But it was this sense of failure that made him determined to succeed in his new life. A year after his retirement, Li Ning began a new job—as a businessman. But he didn’t forget his sporting background. He decided to set up a sportswear company, competing with global giants like Nike and Adidas. He chose his own name as the brand mark. The bright red logo is made up of the first two pinyin letters of Li Ning’s name, L and N.

Li Ning’s sports clothes came onto the market at just the right time. The number of young people with money to spend was on the increase—and sport had never been so popular. Li Ning’s designs were attractive, and they had a major advantage over their better-known rivals(对手) like Nike and Adidas—they were cheaper.

A pair of Nike trainers, for example, could cost up to five times as much as a similar Li Ning product. Success for Li Ning was guaranteed(保障), and it came quickly.

In just a few years, Li Ning won more than fifty percent of the national market. Today a Li Ning product is purchased every ten seconds. But the clothes are not only worn on the athletics track or the football pitch. If you go into a school or university anywhere, you will see students in Li Ning tracksuits with the familiar logo. The company has also grown internationally. The Spanish and French gymnastics teams wear Li Ning clothes, while Italian designers are employed by the company to create new styles. Whenever Chinese athletes step out onto the track during the 2008 Olympics, they will be wearing Li Ning tracksuits.

But Li Ning’s goal when he retired was not to make money. His dream was to open a school for gymnasts. He was able to do this in 1991. Since then, he has continued to help young people to achieve their sporting ambitions. Like Pelé and Muhammad Ali before him, who have worked with the United Nations for children’s rights and peace, Li Ning has discovered that the work of a great sportsman does not finish when he retires from the sport. It starts. And if you are a great sportsperson, anything is possible, as Li Ning’s advertising slogan

says.

An Unforgettable Trip

Traveling to other places can always bring me something different. I still remember the unforgettable experience of traveling in Hangzhou.

During the last summer vacation, my mom and I took a high-speed train to Hangzhou. After we settled down in a hotel, we began to travel around the most famous attraction of the city, the West Lake. I was deeply impressed by the beautiful scenery of the West Lake. What’s

14

more surprising was that the scenic beauty blends naturally with many famous historical and cultural sites. In this scenic area, the Grave of General Yue Fei, the Six Harmonies Pagoda and the Ling Yin Temple are probably the most frequently visited attractions.

I enjoyed myself over there and benefited a lot from this travel because I enriched my knowledge about the Chinese culture and deepened the understanding about travel itself.
